Présentation entreprise :
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit, tax-exempt, private organization established in 1895 that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity. With more than a century of experience, long-term commitments in dozens of landscapes, presence in more than 60 nations, and experience helping to establish over 150 protected areas across the globe, WCS has amassed the biological knowledge, cultural understanding and partnerships to ensure that vibrant, wild places and wildlife thrive alongside local communities. Working with local communities and organizations, that knowledge is applied to address species, habitat and ecosystem management issues critical to improving the quality of life of poor rural people whose livelihoods depend on the direct utilization of natural resources.
Contexte et mission :
In the DRC, and more specifically in and around the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) in the Ituri province, the WCS, as Reserve manager, seeks to support the development of micro-business in local communities. The pilot phase of this approach is implemented under the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme which aims at reconciling the challenges of wildlife conservation with those of food security in fifteen countries.
The SWM Programme wants to help rural households from the local communities to develop micro-business as alternative income generating activities to the bushmeat value chain. The approach that will be implemented is to train rural household to business via agents called “business mentors”, help them develop a business plan, grant them with a starting budget and monitor the results while bringing support when needed.
After the pilot phase, the approach is expected to be replicated in more villages in and around the OWR.
